Pilot recycling scheme a big hit
01/03/2010

pne|news and events

PNE’s pilot recycling scheme with North East Recycling has now reached its sixth month in action.

To date 40% of PNE’s tenants on Pink Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne have joined the scheme and we are now recycling approximately one large wheelie bin of paper per week, which would have otherwise never been reused again.

Taking action on waste is essential. The UK, according to Defra, is consuming natural resources at an unsustainable rate which is an unnecessary contribution to climate change. Each year we generate about 100 million tonnes of waste from households, commerce and industry.

‘Most of this ends up in landfill, where biodegradable waste generates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. And much valuable energy is used up in making new products which are later disposed of, also contributing to climate change’ (Defra)

PNE is assisting with the unnecessary contribution we make to climate change and is giving a big congratulations and thank you to those already signed up to the scheme, and a big request to those who aren’t already signed up to do so.

If you would like to know more about the recycling scheme within PNE contact Michelle Hetherington 0191 230 6407 or email michelle.hetherington@pne.org
