A start-up scheme that will help young people to launch sustainable businesses has opened for applications.

PNE Enterprise, the Newcastle-based enterprise agency, is inviting Tyne and Wear residents with business ideas that tackle environmental issues, reduce inequalities or improve health and wellbeing to apply for their new Sustainable Start-up Award.

The Award will provide up to £1,000 to Tyne and Wear start-ups that support the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discretionary grants can be used to cover costs that enable the business to be more sustainable, for example, purchasing recycled materials or energy efficient tools or equipment.

As well as financial assistance, successful applicants will be eligible for one-to-one mentoring and invited to attend workshops and masterclasses by leading business professionals.

The initiative, which is supported by a private funder, is aimed at businesses ready to launch or that are less than three months old and founded by Tyne and Wear residents aged between 18-30.

Lee Longstaff, manager of the Sustainable Start-up Award, said: “We’re delighted to offer the first sustainable start-up initiative to Tyne and Wear businesses. Promoting responsible business is extremely important to us, and the Award enables us to do this whilst also supporting bright and innovative new businesses to start-up and grow.

“We’ve already received a significant amount of interest in the Award and we’re excited to finally open it for applications.”

Dawn Cranswick, PNE Group’s chief executive, commented: “As an organisation, PNE Group has always strived to promote sustainability and to endorse responsible businesses.

“Our work with clients has enabled us to promote sustainable enterprise in the national and international sphere, and now we’re delighted to offer more dedicated support to businesses starting up in Tyne and Wear.”
