Stitching Together a Successful Business: Crafted for Love

When Grace Chu first began creating handmade crochet gifts, she wasn't thinking about building a business. Like many creative people, she simply enjoyed making things that brought joy to others.
Inspired by family and friends who shared her passion for crochet, Grace started experimenting with products that combined her creative skills with a love for thoughtful gifts. The more she created, the more she saw an opportunity. People were looking for gifts that felt personal and meaningful, yet many of the options available on the high street felt generic or disposable.
What if she could turn that passion into something more?
That question became the starting point for Crafted for Love, a business specialising in handmade crochet flower bouquets, keepsakes, cards and gifts designed to help people celebrate life's important moments
Taking the First Steps
Like many first-time business owners, Grace quickly realised that running a business required far more than making great products. Creating was the easy part. Knowing how to attract customers, market a business, price products, build an online presence and generate sales was an entirely different challenge.
At the time, Crafted for Love existed more as an idea than a fully developed business. Grace had the creativity and determination to succeed, but she needed guidance on how to transform a promising idea into something sustainable.
That's when she discovered PNE and The Sustainable Creative Programme.
After attending PNE’s Start a Creative Business Bootcamp and meeting with advisor Maria Payumo, Grace was introduced to the range of support available to help early-stage entrepreneurs take the next step. What followed was more than just business advice. It was the support, encouragement and practical guidance needed to start thinking like a business owner.

Building the Foundations for Growth
With support from PNE, Grace began developing the foundations that would help Crafted for Love grow from an idea into a real business.
She worked on strengthening her Etsy presence, improving how her products were presented online and developing a better understanding of how customers discover and buy products. Through guidance and mentoring, she also gained confidence in areas that felt unfamiliar, including marketing, branding, customer engagement and social media.
Working closely with Maria gave Grace the confidence to make decisions and keep moving forward. Whether discussing marketing ideas, exploring opportunities for growth or simply providing encouragement during difficult moments, Maria became an important sounding board as the business developed.
"PNE has definitely helped me become more confident as a creative business owner… There have been several areas of support that have made a real difference. Maria's advice on improving my Etsy shop, including how to improve the customer experience and encourage positive reviews, has been very useful. I have also received helpful advice on social media, particularly around creating better content and increasing traffic and visibility"
For Grace, one of the most valuable aspects of the support was having someone to turn to for advice. Starting a business can feel overwhelming when you're navigating everything on your own. Having access to an experienced adviser like Maria helped her make informed decisions, challenge assumptions and focus on the activities that would have the biggest impact. As her confidence grew, so did the business.
Meeting Customers Face-to-Face
A major turning point came when the Sustainable Creative team suggested that Grace test-trade at Ouseburn Market.
Until that point, most customer interactions had happened online. The market gave her the opportunity to showcase her products in person, speak directly with customers and gain immediate feedback from the people she was trying to reach.
Rather than relying solely on online sales data, Grace could see customers interacting with her products first-hand. She learned which products attracted the most attention, what customers valued most and how people described the business in their own words. Those conversations provided insights that no online platform could offer and gave her a much clearer understanding of her target market.
"I am most proud that I took the first step and turned an idea into a real business. Starting from zero and learning everything along the way has been challenging, but seeing customers choose my products, leave positive feedback and come back to buy again has been incredibly rewarding. I am particularly proud of taking the business from online selling into local markets. Meeting customers face-to-face and seeing their positive reactions to my handmade products has given me much more confidence in both the products and the direction of the business"
Perhaps most importantly, they provided validation. Every conversation, every compliment and every sale reinforced that there was a genuine demand for thoughtful handmade gifts that offered something different from mass-produced alternatives. It gave Grace the confidence to trust her instincts, continue developing the business and invest more energy into its future.

Growing from Maker to Business Owner
Today, Crafted for Love has evolved into a growing handmade gifting business offering crochet flower bouquets, keepsakes, keyrings, decorative gifts and greeting cards that help customers mark special occasions in a more personal way.
The business has expanded beyond its original concept, but the values behind it remain the same. Every product is still rooted in creativity, craftsmanship and the desire to create meaningful gifts that bring joy to the recipient.
As the business has grown, so too has Grace's confidence as an entrepreneur. She now approaches her work with a clearer understanding of her customers, a stronger brand identity and a long-term vision for the future. Whether developing new products, exploring retail opportunities or growing her online presence, she is building a business with purpose and direction.
A Business Built on Creativity, Confidence and Support
Crafted for Love has created a loyal customer base, an expanding product range and clear ambitions for the future. What started as a creative idea has developed into a business with real momentum, supported by stronger marketing, greater customer insight and increased confidence in its direction.
When asked about the support she received from PNE and The Sustainable Creative Programme Grace said:
"I would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about starting or growing a creative business. One of the biggest benefits for me has been having access to people who can look at my business from a different perspective and give practical advice.
Maria's support with my Etsy shop and social media has been really helpful, and the opportunity Jack introduced me to at Ouseburn Market has had a particularly positive impact on my business.
For someone starting a business, there are so many things you don't know at the beginning. Having people, you can ask for advice, learn from and who can connect you with opportunities makes the journey much less overwhelming"
With strong foundations in place, Grace is now focused on the next stage of the Crafted for Love journey. Building on the confidence, customer insight and experience gained so far, she hopes to continue growing the business by reaching new audiences both online and in person. Plans include expanding her presence at local markets, strengthening her digital marketing activity and exploring opportunities to work with independent retailers who share her passion for unique, handcrafted products.
Today, Crafted for Love stands as an example of what can happen when creativity is combined with the right support. From a simple idea inspired by a love of crafting, Grace has built the foundations of a growing business and a brand with the potential to reach even more customers in the years ahead.
