Qualifications Case Study: Melissa Middleton

Melissa Middleton is the Business Support Co-ordinator at PNE. She decided to complete a CMI qualification to enhance and certify her skills as a leader and manager in her work.

After an initial assessment with PNE's advisor, Melissa was assigned an assessor, who then helped her pick suitable modules that would help her develop as a manager/leader. The pair met once a month where they prepared drafts of assignments to submit to oscar, PNE's e-portfolio system.

When meeting my assessor, she seemed genuine and interested in helping me.

Completing her programme allowed Melissa to demonstrate to those who own a business that completing a management and leadership qualification is helpful for them and allowed her to have more meaningful conversations with her clients.

Melissa's qualification allowed her to become a member of CMI, opening networks to fellow graduates of management and leadership qualifications who share their thoughts and ideas. The qualification gave her a chance to be more involved in stakeholder management and assessments in her workplace.

It was difficult at the beginning as I put barriers in the way of myself. I have a fear of writing because of my dyslexia, but Helen my assessor helped me so much and I couldn’t have done it without her.

Melissa determined to teach her clients a thing or two about Stakeholder Analysis to ensure that they are aware of their wider view of what they need for their business. One change she has implemented in her job is, ensuring to include coaching in her work, either in her 1-2-1 sessions with start-ups or during her meetings with her more established clients. She assures her clients know about coaching and how they can implement this within their business.

After completing her qualification with PNE, Melissa wanted to lead and have an influence on a large organisation and decided to volunteer as a Governor for Newcastle City Learning, which helps adults in Newcastle get back into education. Four years ago, she became the chair of Newcastle City Learning, a title that she still holds today.
