Case Study: Richard Oswald, Work and Learning Coach at Crisis

Inspired to support others to develop their skills and abilities through mentoring, Richard Oswald studied the Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring with PNE.
Richard completed the qualification whilst working as a Work and Learning Coach at Crisis, the national charity for homelessness. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Crisis works with individuals directly affected by homelessness and campaigns for changes needed to solve homelessness for good. As a Work and Learning Coach for the organisation, Richard is responsible for facilitating job search sessions and for supporting individuals on a one-to-one basis as they kickstart their journey towards employment or education.
Despite having a number of years of experience under his belt, Richard sought the accreditation of skills provided by studying a professional qualification. He said: “I felt like the qualification was the missing part of the jigsaw in terms of my delivery of one-to-one sessions. Having worked in this type of role on and off for a number of years, I have acquired comprehensive knowledge and experience of the position but no formalised training.”
Richard earned his qualification in January 2018, and now reports that his knowledge of coaching and mentoring has increased from a previously ‘Poor‘ understanding to a now ‘Good‘ understanding. Richard also notes that, after studying the qualification, he has increased performance management skills, has a new improved ability to manage change and conflict, and feels able to inspire innovation in his team.
As a result of studying the qualification with PNE , Richard has a newfound confidence and understanding of what is needed to be a successful and impactful coach: “I now work more efficiently, and I am in a better position to motivate and develop both service users and colleagues. “It was challenging initially as I’d been out of education for a while – and the first assignment felt like a mountain to climb,” Richard adds, “But persevering and obtaining the qualification has been worthwhile. I definitely credit my tutor for inspiring me to continue throughout the process. She was fantastic, always patient and supportive when I was struggling, while keeping me on track to achieve my personal goals.”
